Origins of Name

Meaning of name Clyde: Scottish and northern Irish: probably of pre-Celtic origin, used in Scotland and Ulster as a topographic name for people who lived on the banks of the Clyde river, which flows through Glasgow. The Clyde River is the eighth longest river in the United Kingdom, and the second longest in Scotland. The river name derives from the Gaelic name "Cluaidh", the meaning of which is so ancient as to be obscure. It is believed to be derived from the Brythonic word "clut", meaning "the cleansing one". There was also a Celtic goddess named Clota, who was considered the guardian of the river, and the Roman name for the river was Clota.

The "Compt Book" (accounts) of David Wedderburne, merchant of Dundee 1587 - 1630, records one William Clyde, admitted burgess of Dundee in 1580 and the Lanark Register of Testaments 1595 - 1800 records the Will of one Helen Clyde, of the town of Belstaine, parish of Carhike, in 1665. William Clyde married Jane Parkehill at Paisley in Renfrewshire on the 10th February 1682. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Willelmus Clide, witness, which was dated 1493, Memoirs of the Maxwells of Pollok, during the reign of King James IV of Scotland, 1488 - 1513.

Clyde also became established at a comparatively early date as a given name among American Blacks.

Location

In Scotland: The name origin is a topographical name for those who live on the banks of the Clyde River. The Clyde River flowes through South Lanarkshire, Argyll, Ayrshire, so it makes sense this is where many of the Clyde families would be concentrated. Today, most Clydes in Scotland are still found in Lanarkshire.

In England the Clydes were mainly found in London, Durham, and Northumberland.

In the United States: In 1840, there were 44 Clydes in the US with New York (36%) having the highest concentration of Clydes. Pennsylvania (23%) and New Hampshire (16%) came in second; closely followed by Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Virginia, Mississippi and North Carolina.

In 1880, there were 798 Clydes in America and the greatest number were still found in New York (13%) and Pennsylvania (24%) but secondly also in Ohio, Minnesota, Iowa, Utah territory, California and South Carolina.

By the year 2000, there were about 3,432 individuals with the last name Clyde in the US, ranking it number 8,794 for all surnames and relatively uncommon. In recent history the name has been more prevalent in the West, especially in Utah. Clyde is least common in the southeastern states.
